Department of Applied Mechanics started working since 1961, when in the city Stanyslav at general technical faculty of Lviv Polytechnic Institute was established Department of Mathematics and Mechanics. Head of the Department was assistant professor, PhD., technical science, Yevhen Shelyepyn.

Since 1970, the Department of Theoretical Mechanics received independent status. Headed the department: associate professor, PhD. Vira Aleksyeyeva (1970 -1972 years), associate professor, PhD., Petro Ohorodnikov (1972-1986 years) associate professor, PhD., Oleksandr Petruk (1986 1991 years). Since 1991 the head of the department was elected professor, D.Sc. Petro Ohorodnikov.
From 1996 to 2015 the department was headed by Professor, Doctor of Science Vekeryk Vasyl. In 2015 the department was headed by Professor, Doctor of Sciences Mikhail Lyskanych. In 2016, the Department of Theoretical Mechanics was renamed in the Department of Applied Mechanics and the head of the department is appointed Professor, Doctor of Sciences Mykola Vorobyov.
