Improve the environmental condition and increase energy efficiency!

Scientists from the leading universities of the cross-border region, namely the Ivano-Frankivsk National Technical University of Oil and Gas, The Technical University  of  Cluj-Napoca  (North  University Centre  of  Baia Mare), Technical University in Kosice, work within the project “Energy Recovery from Municipal Solid Waste by Thermal Conversion Technologies in Cross-border Region (EnyMSW)». The issue of solid waste recovery using heat treatment technologies is a pressing issue.

As previously reported, university specialists conducted waste sampling for analysis of heat treatment (the sampling was carried out from fresh waste transferred from the compactor to the landfill surface). In general, after collecting, sorting all the waste into categories and weighing, there were five samples of solid waste of 6 kg each.

Scientists from the University, Artur Voronych and Liubomyr Zhovtulia have already transported 5 kg from each waste sample to Baia Mare for heat treatment. During the meeting, the participants again visited the laboratory to analyze the composition and energy parameters of the wastes that are being burned.

Thus, at the partner university, using the laboratory equipment for thermal treatment of waste, the following parameters will be analyzed: the combustion temperature for each waste sample; recovery mass of waste sample (difference between mass of original sample and solid residues obtained after burning); emission composition of each sample; composition of solid residues. In addition, 1 kg of each sample was left at IFNTUOG for chemical analysis of pH, humidity and content of organic / inorganic carbon and heavy metals: Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Cd, Co, Cr, Mn, K, etc.

In general, the results will form the basis for proposals to explore regional policy in the field of solid waste treatment methods and technologies with energy recovery.

The experts who are implementing the EnyMSW project in Ukraine are convinced that their activities should be successful, as waste is a resource that can be turned into an energy source.
