Municipal solid waste (MSW), which is generated in large quantities and is not used, pollutes the environment and thus poses a serious environmental problem, which is being noticed by everyone today. Scientists understand this well and see the solution to the situation: garbage can be turned into an energy source!
The activity of the leading higher education institutions of the cross-border region within the framework of the international project ENyMSW, involving scientists of the Ivano-Frankivsk National Technical University of Oil and Gas, Cluj-Napoca University of Technology, Northern University Center in Baia Mare (Romania), Kosice Technical University (Slovakia) aims to recover energy from MSW using thermal conversion technologies.
For all project member states, the issue of heat recovery from MSW through thermal treatment is an urgent problem, but each region has its own specificities to consider. Therefore, the project provides for the exchange of best practices on MSW management. Thus, the representatives of the project working group from IFNTUOG Head the laboratories of the Department of Energy Management and Technical Diagnostics, Associate Professor Liubomyr Zhovtulia and Associate Professor of the Department of Ecology Teodosiia Yatsyshyn together with the Chief Engineer of NGO “Polihon TPV” Petro Danyliuk and Deputy Director of NGO “Polihon TPV” Vasyl Popovych visited Baia Mare (Romania) and Presov (Slovakia).
During the trip, discussions were held on the management of MSW with representatives of organizations implementing MSW management in the project partner countries, including: SC DRUSAL CA (a company working in the field of waste recycling and disposal in Baia Mare, Romania), SA «Calex» (Polyethylene Waste Recycling Company, Romania), SMID (Integrated Waste Management System in Maramures, Romania), FECUPRAL (Private Utility and Industrial Waste Management Company, Slovakia). In addition, visits to production facilities of these companies were organized for project team representatives.
Having returned from a working visit, IFNTUOG experts noted a comprehensive approach to waste management in both Romania and Slovakia. In particular, Associate Professor Teodosiia Yatsyshyn noted: “Here every link of the system, from the user, actively participates in this process. The approach to MSW management in these countries, and even cities, differs significantly both at the legislative level and in local governance, which depends on industry development, government support and local residents' awareness. A well-developed system of separate garbage collection allows to obtain a qualitative resource for further use and reduces the amount of waste accumulation at the landfill. The conscious attitude of the population and the well-established processes of the municipal services form the basis for obtaining a wide range of MSW resources."
Scientists note that the experience gained is extremely valuable in improving the domestic system of MSW management.
The EnyMSW project started on November 1 and is funded under the Hungary-Slovakia-Romania-Ukraine (HUSKROUA) Cross-border Cooperation Program 2014-2020.
